September 1861... an Artillery unit formed out of Lone Rock, Wisconsin. They were answering a call of their country to fight in what we now call the Civil War. As a Wisconsin-based artillery unit we have chosen to represent the 6th Battery and honor the history of the unit.

Original Cannon 1844 6 pound smooth bore
The Cannon that appears green is actually 173 years old. Yes, you are right 173 years old. It has not been polished, therefore it is able to form it's patina in a soft green. That is what Bronze does. This is a 6 pound smooth bore. A replica sits to the left of the original. Both cannons perform the same. There has been no change in the original version. The photo's were taken July 1,2017 and fired by the 6th Wisconsin Light Artillery, a modern day member of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Association.

We were honored to meet a decendent of one of the boys of the 6th Battery while we were at Lone Rock June 10. Pictured encircled above is Hugh Flannery. 1838 -1913. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Corinth Oct. 4 1862. He had been hit by shrapnel and and lost an eye and had many other body injuries including being bayonetted. In that battle 5 were killed and 20 were wounded from the 6th. Hugh was discharged January 1863 due to his wounds. That did not stop him. He married in 1864 and had many children. His occupation in the 1870 and 1880 census had his occupation listed as saloon keeper. He is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Avoca, Wisconsin.

12 Pound Napoleon Cannon
Milton Wisconsin 2016......Last year we were using an original cannon from the Civil War. 12 lb. Napoleon Gun # 276. The National Guard has pulled their agreement after 24 years. We are renegotiating the agreement and hope to bring this cannon back to the Wisconsin public.
Addendum 6.21.2017 After 24 years of caring for tube #276 the National Guard denies the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Association, a non-profit group. Denies usage of the bronze Napolean tube. Years of fundraising and usage has gone to waste. They could not prove ownership, but took the tube away under false notice.

Safety Drill
Before the beginning of our Summer Schedule. Each Cannoneer is put through a thorough drill for Safety. The drill/training is a full day of training and each recruit is tested on all positions that he/she may hold during the firing of the cannon. The position of Gunner, usually a Corporal, is only held by a person that has worked with the cannon for many years. The Gunner calls the commands to the crew, and makes sure everyone is doing what they need to do, safely, before the cannon is fired. The Corporal is in the center with his hand in the air.
Safety Training
A safety drill is done with re-enactors each time they go to a reenactment. The drill is necessary at each reenactment on a daily basis to secure everyone is on-board with the correct safety measures to take a position on the Cannon.
